Umbrella Cockatoo

Cockatoos are very smart, curious and affectionate companion birds. Cockatoos are VERY affectionate companion birds when raised properly. They love to cuddle, sometimes for an hour or more. They love to show off and get everybody’s attention.

Latin: Cacatua alba
English: Umbrella or White-crested Cockatoo

Origin: Indonesia: northern Moluccas - Obi, Batjan, Halmahera, Ternate and Tidore.

Status: Large and rapid decline during the 1980s due to overtrapping and habitat destruction.

Aviculture: Common; readily available but decreased availability inevitable although one of easiest of cockatoos to breed. During the 1980s it was, with Goffin´s, the most commonly imported and least expensive of cockatoos. Then neglected by breeders, it is now valued.

Description: Umbrella Cockatoos are a full-sized cockatoo. They are primarily white with long wide crest feathers that resemble an umbrella when raised. The underside of the wings and tail is also frequently tinged with yellow. They have black beaks and dark-grey feet.

Care: A roomy cage is required unless the bird is to be let out for extended periods. Many birds can spend most of their time on a play pen or parrot perch. Social Behaviors: In the wild, Cockatoos are friendly and peaceful. They are generally seen in small groups among the treetops.

Potential Problems: Cockatoos can be quite loud screechers. The behaviour can be reduced by giving attention and proper surroundings. Also, since they are prone to chewing, if they are not given enough attention they will chew their own feathers.

Activities: Loves to climb and play and chew. Provide lots of toys.

Size: 12" in.

Life Expectancy: 30-70 years

Talking Ability: Good

Special Dietary Needs:

Give your Cockatoo a healthy diet. Seeds are, contrary to popular belief, not a suitable diet for parrots. Around 60 percent of your Cockatoo's diet should comprise of formulated, pellets. Vegetables are another necessary part of your 'Too's diet; some of the best vegetables include kale, broccoli, dandelion greens, carrots, cooked sweet potato, and squash. Fruits are healthy and tasty, but should only be fed in moderation due to their high water content; good choices include orange fruits such as papaya, mango, oranges. Healthy table foods (well-cooked meat, brown rice, tofu, cheese, non-fat yogurt, cooked egg, cooked beans, carrots, etc) are also acceptable in small amounts. Seeds are a good treat; grit, cuttlebone, and vitamin supplements are unnecessary. Food should act as mental stimulation as well as nutrition, so introduce new foods as a means of chewing, play, and curiosity fulfillment.
